SHILLONG, Sep 19: The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has called on Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla to convene an urgent Academic Council meeting within a week to discuss the implementation of the 10-point grading system as recommended by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Speaking to reporters, NEHUSU president Sandy Sohtun stated that the UGC had written to the university in June, recommending the adoption of the 10-point grading system. “We will meet the Vice-Chancellor on Monday to demand an urgent Academic Council meeting,” Sohtun said.
He further explained that NEHUSU has sought support from the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA), and Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU unit in pushing for this urgent meeting.
In a letter submitted to the Vice-Chancellor, Sohtun made it clear that the union demands the immediate implementation of Draft Ordinance OC-20, which was approved during the 112th Academic Council Meeting in June this year for 2022-2024 batch onwards.
“The administration’s failure to implement the approved Ordinance, despite its endorsement by the Academic Council — the highest academic authority in the university — has jeopardised the future of the students, particularly the 2022-2024 batch,” Sohtun remarked.
He emphasised that the union’s demand is in the best interest of the students, noting that the current grading system, as outlined in OC-7, is outdated and no longer aligns with UGC recommendations and guidelines. “To address this issue and prevent further injustice to the student community, we call for an immediate Academic Council meeting to rectify the situation and uphold academic fairness and integrity,” the NEHUSU president concluded.
