SHILLONG, Sep 22: Assembly Speaker, Thomas A Sangma has hailed the cabinet nod to ‘one nation, one election’ and has termed it both logical and practical.
“India is a big nation with a big population and we have multiple elections throughout the year. I think we are spending a lot of energy and money. One nation, one election seems both logical and practical,” Sangma said.
“We have to see how it works politically. At the Centre, people want one single party and in their own states they vote for parties and candidates depending on their mindset. We will have to wait and watch,” he said.
He said he would be interested in knowing the people’s opinion on this.
“We have assembly elections every year (across the country) and some more in the form of bypolls, etc,” he reasoned.
The State TMC has welcomed the ‘one nation, one election’ move, terming it as the need of the hour while the UDP has refused to comment on the development, saying they would put their heads together before making their stand clear.
The State Congress has termed it as a non-starter and another “jumla” of the BJP-led government at the Centre.
