Runners throng Raj Bhavan at 5 am for Swachhata Run

SHILLONG, Oct 2: Raj Bhavan Shillong witnessed an unprecedented turnout as early as 5 am on Wednesday, as runners of all age groups gathered to register for the 5.5 km Swachhata Run held in celebration of Gandhi Jayanti. Over 1,500 participants from Shillong joined the event, which was organised by Raj Bhavan and the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) Shillong, in collaboration with the District Sports Office, East Khasi Hills.
Governor CH Vijayashankar flagged off the run, which aimed to raise awareness about cleanliness and promote the central government’s Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. Speaking at the event, the Governor expressed his appreciation for the large number of participants who braved the rain to take part in the marathon.
The 5.5 km run began at Raj Bhavan and passed through key landmarks such as St. Anthony’s College, Shillong College, St. Mary’s College, Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah Market, Fire Brigade, St. Edmund’s School, Malki Point, Barik Point, Civil Hospital, Main Secretariat, and the DC Office, before concluding back at Raj Bhavan.
In the Open Category (Men), Daniel L Walang secured first place, followed by Nahtei Wangnao in second, and Dasaman Khyndait in third. In the Open Category (Women), Marqueenless Ramsiej claimed the top spot, with Phyrnai Khyndait and Dapliss Wahlang finishing second and third, respectively.
