TURA, Oct 3: An Assam resident, Amit Kumar Singha, narrowly escaped from his kidnappers after being held captive for eight days in the Dadenggre civil subdivision.
Singha, a taxi driver from Nityanandpur, Hailakandi, was rescued by the West Garo Hills (WGH) district police on October 3.
According to police sources, the incident began when two individuals hired Singha’s taxi at Khanapara on a trip to Singimari in South Salmara, Assam. Along the way, three more kidnappers joined them, and Singha was forcibly taken to an unknown location.
His captors reportedly transferred him to another vehicle and kept him in a jungle area in Garo Hills for over a week.
A case was also registered in this regard in Dispur, Assam.
Following the registration of the case, investigation began and the location of the victim was triangulated to the Dadenggre civil subdivision.
“He was shifted to the Alto and the other vehicle followed. He was kept somewhere in the jungle for around 7-8 days (in Garo Hills) but yesterday he heard the kidnappers were taking about police presence in the area and today morning, the victim, finding no one around, escaped and later was rescued by OC Damal Asim PS from the Nokma’s residence at Baljek Aduma where he had taken up shelter,” informed acting Superintendent of Police of WGH, Jerry Marak.
“We received information on the presence of the kidnapping gang from Assam police sources as well as the victim’s, following which a combing operation was launched in various locations. When the kidnappers heard about police roaming the area, they abandoned the victim and ran off. When he saw no one guarding him, the victim managed to flee from the area and reached the nearest village to seek shelter. He was rescued from there,” informed Marak.
While no arrests have been made as yet, police are on the lookout of the gang which, prima facie looks like a mixed one comprising people from Assam and Meghalaya.
