SHILLONG, Oct 7: Despite numerous discussions and presentations in the high-end rooms of the Secretariat about reducing traffic congestion in the state capital, the situation reached a breaking point on Monday as major parts of the city experienced massive traffic jams late into the night.
With thousands of people flooding the streets daily for Durga Puja celebrations, the city has been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of vehicles. By evening, the traffic situation in areas like Barik-Civil Hospital became so dire that even two-wheelers struggled to find space to manoeuvre. Some motorcyclists resorted to riding on the footpaths to get through.
The traffic police, unable to manage the chaos, were seen instructing people not to use the footpaths, though with little effect.
It is worth noting that most of the government’s brainstorming sessions aimed at alleviating Shillong’s traffic woes end up as mere discussions within the walls of the Secretariat, with little visible action being taken on the ground.
