Tura, Oct 14: A media association from Garo Hills, Garo Hills Press and Media Association (GHMPA) has condemned the alleged interference of the executive and administration organ of South Garo Hills after it issued summons to a YouTuber, Tatu Marak for his report on the recent flooding that took place in the district.
Earlier, the BDO of Chokpot issued summons to the NEIGNews, a YouTube channel belonging to Marak after he interviewed victims of the recent devastation who all claimed to not have received benefits from the government, more than 3 days after being affected by the deluge. They, however, rescinded their statement when approached by the administration after the report went viral.
In a statement this evening, the GHPMA condemned the interference of the move for their interference and smooth functioning in raising the independent voice of the people reacting against any anti – social practices, irregularities or any scam in public fora.
“We would like to place on record that though Press & Media is the most important organ of a democratic setup and is the backbone of citizenry as being the fourth pillar of democracy. However, such an act of obstruction in independent reporting and threat by the administrative and executive organ of the state to the media house and journalists of Garo Hills associated with fair and transparent reporting is highly condemnable and needs immediate action,” said the statement.
