3 DRDA officials held on graft allegations

Diphu: Three junior engineers, serving in different development projects of the state, were arrested on Sunday on allegations of involvement in financial irregularities during their term at Rongkhang development block of Hamren in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.
Baithalangso police of West Karbi Anglong, under Hamren police district, arrested the trio serving in various development blocks on a graft case filed by one Mohan Rongpi, a resident of Diphu, alleging their involvement in massive financial irregularities and the BDO concerned and his subordinates during their service in Rongkhang development block of Hamren in implementation of NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) in 2011.
The three government officials, serving in DRDA (District Rural Development Agency) and posted in development blocks, were taken into police custody on Sunday formally and have been forwarded to Hamren court where police will seek remand for certain further questioning.
Earlier in the day, junior engineers Ajit Talukdar, Kamal Barua and Mrigan Talukdar and few others were summoned to police station for query in connection with the case.
‘I filed the case against the officials of Rongkhang development block in 2011 in Baithalangso police station alleging massive corruption in implementing scheme under NREGS. I conducted field inquiry within the block area where according to government record various schemes were claimed to have been completed but practically nothing was done,’ the complainant Mohan Rongpi said.
He added, ‘I submitted large volume of documents to the police for their ready reference and pointed out in my FIR some gross irregularities amounting to over Rs 22 crores spent against construction of roads on bogus format and plantations of nonexistent cash crop in large sector, water harvesting etc. According to my preliminary investigation I have noticed abnormality of around Rs 50 crores spent by Rongkhang Development Block within a period of 2 years.’ (UNI)
