SHILLONG, JOWAI, Oct 16: Former MLA of Nartiang constituency, HB Dan, passed away on Wednesday morning at his residence in Dulong, Jowai, West Jaintia Hills, after battling illness for several months.
A dedicated public servant, Dan was elected as the MLA for Nartiang constituency three times — first in 1978 as Minister of State, and again in 1988 and 1998, during which he served in the Cabinet, holding various portfolios in the Meghalaya government.
He also served twice as a Member of the District Council (MDC) and was elected Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) three times.
Born on June 1, 1942, HB Dan was a prominent leader of the Nongjngi Presbyterian Church, deeply engaged in both his faith and his community.
He is survived by his wife, seven children (four sons and three daughters), and 19 grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Jowai on October 18.
Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma, along with the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat, has extended condolences on the passing of H Britainwar Dan. Expressing grief, the Speaker remembered Dan, fondly known as “Ma Dan,” for his long service as a three-term MLA from Nartiang constituency.
