SHILLONG, Oct 17: VPP MLA from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, has urged East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah, to appoint a gatekeeper at the Lawmali cemetery, which has become a hotspot for drug addicts.
Speaking to reporters after his meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, Nongrum mentioned that 14 religious denominations have cemeteries in Lawmali, a land under the Forest department.
He emphasised the need for a gatekeeper to monitor the area, which has become notorious for unwanted activities, particularly in light of the rising drug problem in the city.
Nongrum also informed that during a meeting convened by the Deputy Commissioner on July 14, a resolution was adopted requesting the Forest department to appoint a full-time gatekeeper to manage the cemetery.
“We have urged the DC to follow up with the Forest department on the resolution,” Nongrum said, adding that they have received complaints about vehicles parking late at night along the road opposite the Lawmali cemetery.
Additionally, Nongrum mentioned that they requested the DC to ask the police to patrol the area.
