SHILLONG, Oct 18: The ACHIK has appealed for a synergy between local organisations, Police department and the Border Security Force (BSF) to effectively combat and curb the illegal smuggling activities along the India-Bangladesh border, particularly in areas bordering Meghalaya.
In a letter to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Western Range, the ACHIK highlighted the ongoing smuggling of goods such as livestock, drugs and contraband items, which, it argued, poses a serious threat to national security, disrupts the local economy and worsens the region’s law and order situation. “Given the strategic role that the police and BSF plays in safeguarding the regions, we believe that a collaborative approach between police, BSF and local organisations like ACHIK is essential to curb this menace,” the ACHIK said.
It also proposed several measures to address the issue, some of which included holding joint awareness programmes in border villages to educate residents about the dangers and legal consequences of smuggling, enhanced vigilance and intelligence sharing, and fostering community engagement through regular meetings between police, BSF officers and local leaders.
The ACHIK also emphasised the importance of rehabilitation programmes, offering vocational training and livelihood support to those involved in smuggling activities.
