SHILLONG, Oct 18: In a unique initiative, the Meghalaya Rural Bank (MRB) organised a financial credit and counselling campaign on Friday for the students of St. Theresa’s Upper Primary School in Kreit village, located within Sohiong C&RD Block.
Addressing the young audience, MRB’s Mawlaingut branch manager, Markynti Marbaniang, stressed the importance of cultivating saving habits early in life.
She advised the students not to spend all the money they receive from parents or relatives on unhealthy snacks, encouraging them to save instead.
Marbaniang also informed parents about the benefits of recurring deposits, which offer the potential for higher interest earnings.
She further introduced various government schemes, including the Atal Pension Scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (life insurance), and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (accidental insurance).
During the programme, one of the students, Alvorene Lyngdoh, expressed her excitement about what she learned during the session.
“Today we learned so much about savings, recurring deposits, insurance, and the importance of having a bank account. What we learned will prepare us for the future,” she said.
The headteacher of the school, Efrimai Mawlong, along with other staff members, also attended the programme.
It may be mentioned that several parents opened savings accounts for their children following the campaign.
