SHILLONG, Oct 18: The state government has asked the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) not to start the operation of the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital since the government will have to enact an Act to enable the University to start the medical college and hospital.
Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters after a cabinet meeting on Friday that the government has decided not to allow USTM to make its medical college functional before a proper Act is put in place.
Lyngdoh said that the government is mandated to monitor various facts like allocation of seats, fees, courses etc., and hence the Health department will work on an Act which will be taken up for discussion in the next cabinet meeting.
Making it clear that allocation of seats and other details of the proposed medical college have to be monitored, Lyngdoh said the Act will set guiding rules for medical colleges in the state.
The university has already announced 40 seats for Meghalaya and has requested an interest-free loan of Rs 233 crore from the state government.
