NONGPOH, Oct 24: A road accident occurred between a truck (AS01DD9728) and car (ML05W5094) on the National Highway-6 in Umdihar, Ri-Bhoi, leaving the driver and two occupants of the car critically injured on Thursday morning.
The incident took place on the Guwahati-Shillong road.
The car, driven by 23-year-old Kynrong Dkhar, was traveling from Wapung village, East Jaintia Hills, toward Guwahati with two passengers — Rep Dkhar and Kharlong Dkhar, residents of Wapung.
The accident reportedly occurred due to excessive speed and negligent driving, resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle. The car first struck the center divider, then veered to the left and collided with the rear of a stationary truck loaded with scrap materials.
The impact was severe, with the car becoming lodged beneath the truck.
The driver, Kynrong Dkhar, sustained serious head injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle.
Emergency responders, including the police and ambulance services, acted promptly. The passengers were immediately transported to Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, while it took rescuers 20 minutes to extricate the driver from the wreckage. He was rushed to the same hospital in a police vehicle.
All three injured victims were subsequently referred to a hospital in Shillong for advanced medical care as their condition remained critical.
Both the damaged car and the truck have been towed to Nongpoh Police Station for further investigation.
