Dissolution of scam-hit CMJ University

SHILLONG: The Supreme Court has directed the Meghalaya Government to take a final decision on dissolution of CMJ University by March 31 this year and also directed the Chancellor of CMJ University, CM Jha, to appear before the investigation agency in Shillong as and when required.

The Court gave these orders after a hearing held on January 10.

Acting on the State Government’s plea seeking four months from the apex court to decide on the matter, the top court asked the Government to take a final call by March 31.

During the hearing, the State Government challenged the interim bail earlier granted to Jha by the Court.

While Supreme Court Advocate Ranjan Mukherjee represented the State Government in the Court, senior Supreme Court Advocate Siddharth Luthra represented the Meghalaya Governor.

Mukherjee said over phone from Delhi on Wednesday that he made a plea before the Court that Jha was not co-operating with the State Police investigating agency.

According to Mukherjee, the Court directed Jha to co-operate with the police in investigation and directed him not to ask for any adjournment.

The case related to the anticipatory bail will come up for hearing again next month.

It was after the State Government received several applications from the students of CMJ University for their accommodation elsewhere that the Government had sought extension of four months before finally dissolving the University.

It was on April 30 last year that the then Governor, RS Mooshahary, had pointed out various anomalies in the functioning of the CMJ University. Later on June 12, he recommended dissolution of the University.
