SHILLONG, Oct 30: The road stretching from Mawkdok to the Syiem ka Hima Sohra Office has been officially renamed ‘U Duwan Sing Syiem Road’ in honour of Syiem Duwan Sing, who served as the Syiem of Hima Sohra from 1780 to 1830 during the British East India Company’s rule.
Sohra MLA Gavin M Mylliem on Wednesday unveiled the commemorative plaque in a ceremony attended by local MDC Titosstarwell Chyne and Freeman Sing Syiem, the current Syiem of Hima Sohra.
The General Administration Department (GAD) issued an official notification on July 29 this year, recognising the late Syiem of Hima Sohra as one of the most esteemed leaders of the Hima Khasi. This recognition was granted following a request from Hima Sohra.
Syiem Duwan Sing is remembered as a diplomatic leader who chose not to join the Khasi freedom fighter Tirot Sing Syiem in the resistance against the British.
It is notable that the Khasi uprising against the British was sparked by a dispute between Tirot Sing Syiem and David Scott, after the latter violated an agreement signed on November 30, 1826.
