SHILLONG, Nov 1: As several major road projects in Meghalaya are in the implementation stage, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) is ensuring that contractors implement necessary precautions to avert landslides during earthwork activities.
A recent visit to project sites, including the Shillong-Dawki road, showed significant earth-cutting work under way across multiple stretches.
According to sources, most parts of the Shillong-Dawki road are not in earthquake-prone areas, though a few sections require additional stability measures.
The NHIDCL is addressing these needs by constructing breast walls and retaining walls where necessary.
“We are employing hill bend sloping to minimise landslide risks,” sources said.
It was informed that an isolated landslide incident occurred in Rngain due to local issues, but it was promptly addressed by the authorities.
According to officials, the earth-cutting work is nearly complete, with only five to ten kilometres remaining, and no other landslide incidents have been reported thus far.
Meanwhile, it was also seen that with the rainy season over, work is now being expedited, with various machinery deployed to cut through hills and prepare the terrain for the road’s construction.
