SHILLONG, Nov 2: The Meghalaya government appears to be more interested in developing the New Shillong township than improving and maintaining the existing urban infrastructure in Shillong.
Apart from the main roads, the internal roads of many localities of the state capital need immediate repair.
A visit to Motphran from GS Road revealed that the road has never been repaired since it was dug up a few years ago probably to lay pipes. The broken stretch of the road, extending several meters, is difficult to navigate or walk on during the rains. The pavements in many areas are uneven or damaged in patches.
The Police Bazar-Keating Road stretch is a case in point. There are instances where elderly citizens have tripped or lost their balance while negotiating the uneven pavements in Police Bazar, where tiles were laid about 10 years ago, and elsewhere.
In some parts of the city, the pavement is on one side of the road.
Consequently, people walking on the other side often have a close shave as vehicles zoom past. If that were not enough, many areas in the heart of the city are without proper street lights. People using the dark stretches fear mugging.
