SHILLONG, Nov 2: Thousands thronged the Laitumkhrah Catholic Cemetery while Archbishop of Shillong Victor Lyngdoh led the Holy Mass honoring the faithful and loved ones who have passed.
The cemetery took on a festive yet reverent atmosphere, with graves freshly cleaned, repainted, and decorated with wreaths and bouquets.
Candles were lit across the grounds, and prayers were offered for the souls of the departed.
Laitumkhrah Catholic Cemetery, the oldest Catholic cemetery in the Northeast, was acquired in 1892.
Today, it holds approximately 4,000 graves, with over 15,000 people interred, as many graves accommodate multiple family members. Spanning about 10 acres, it is also the region’s largest Catholic cemetery.
As dusk falls, thousands visit the cemetery to witness the serene beauty of flickering candles illuminating the evening.
