SHILLONG, Nov 4: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is expected to announce its candidates for the upcoming district council elections in both the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by mid-December.
“We plan to announce the candidates during the general council meeting on December 16,” UDP working president Titosstarwell Chyne told The Shillong Times on Monday.
Chyne, who also serves as the president of UDP East Khasi Hills, said the party has finalised candidates in eight constituencies in East Khasi Hills, with decisions pending in only three. He added that all candidates for the constituencies in East Jaintia Hills, under JHADC, have been finalised, while candidate selection for West Jaintia Hills constituencies is still in progress.
Responding to questions, Chyne stated that the UDP intends to field candidates in all 29 seats in the JHADC. However, he acknowledged that there are some constituencies in the KHADC where the party may not contest, as they have not been able to identify suitable candidates.
Chyne also noted that in certain KHADC seats, the UDP will have an understanding with the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), an ally within the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA).
