Protection of environment message rings loud and clear on Statehood day

SHILLONG: As Meghalaya celebrated its 42nd Statehood Day with much fanfare, a loud and clear message of protecting the environment was sent out by the partners of Pla Iew Club which organised a one-day environment IEC event on the theme ‘Garbage to Gold’ at Khyndailad on Tuesday, in collaboration with East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

Addressing the gathering, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal spoke on the need for a cleaner and greener Meghalaya and asserted that Meghalaya has a tradition of managing waste and garbage since the time of its inception.

Stating that people in rural areas are more aware about the waste disposal than those in urban areas, Goyal called for collaborative efforts to protect and preserve the dwindling environment of the State.

Earlier, Aiban Swer, Assistant Soil Conservation Officer, said that the people need to start the movement of saving the environment right from their homes and every citizen must spread awareness on the need to preserve the environment.

The events an interaction on waste management and its alternatives, street play, display of eco products by Bethany Society, eco games, performances by various artist and art installation from waste materials by students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong.
