TURA, Nov 21: In a pioneering initiative to tackle health and development challenges, a free health screening-cum-Village Health Council (VHC) meeting was held on Thursday at the Indik Nokat Baptist Church compound, under Rerapara C&RD Block in South West Garo Hills.
The initiative, a collaboration among the Health Department, ICDS, Education Department and MSRLS, was aimed to establish Indik Nokat as a model village.
Organised by the DHS, the programme was participated by community members as well as government officials.
Rerapara BDO Armand Momin, who was the chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the significance of embracing health programmes and using ICDS and MSRLS schemes for comprehensive community development.
He urged VHC members to conduct regular meetings to stay informed and motivate individuals previously resistant to health initiatives.
On the other hand, DMCHO Dr. Lydia Marak expressed concern over the high number of anaemic mothers identified during the screening, and stressed the need for immediate action.
She underscored the critical role of family support in antenatal care registration and hospital admissions.
The health team also held awareness sessions on preventing malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy and the importance of immunisation.
It may be mentioned that with a population of just 203, Indik Nokat village achieved an impressive 72% health screening coverage during the event.
A follow-up action plan was also established under which regular visits will be conducted by District and Block teams during Village Health and Nutrition Days (VHND) and VHC meetings.
