Residents oppose govt ‘move’ to convert Byrnihat forest into industrial estate

NONGPOH, Nov 22: The state government’s alleged move to convert the lush CTI (Conservation Training Institute) forest at Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district into an industrial estate has met with stiff opposition.
Hundreds of people from Umpher, Matchogre, and Amphanggre villages, joined by the members of various organisations, organised a public rally under the banner of Joint Action Committee on Friday to denounce the move.
They slammed the government and declared that they will resist this plan to protect their environment and future generations.
The participants expressed concerns over pollution caused by the industries in Byrnihat, which has gained notoriety as one of India’s most polluted regions. They argued that converting the CTI forest into an industrial hub will exacerbate air quality issues and severely impact the health and well-being of local residents.
The speakers, including village leaders and representatives of various organizations and women’s groups, asked the government to reconsider its plan. They said they will under no circumstances allow the conversion of the CTI forest into an industrial estate.
They emphasised that the CTI forest plays a critical role in purifying  the polluted air of the region and serves as a vital source of clean water for the surrounding villages. They warned that if the forest is destroyed, it will spell disaster for the present and future generations.
Further, the speakers criticised Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for allegedly pushing this decision without consulting the public.
They asked the government to shelve the plan and hand over the CTI forest to the Invest Meghalaya Authority for industrial development. They warned that Sangma will be held solely responsible for any adverse outcomes if the government executes the plan.
The organisations which took part in the event include Khasi Students’ Union, Ri Bhoi Youth Federation, Federation of Khasi, Jaintia & Garo People, Byrnihat Women Society, and the Garo Students’ Union (Ri-Bhoi regional unit).
A march was taken out from the Umpher Village Community Hall and it culminated at the CTI office in Byrnihat.
