SHILLONG, Nov 24: The long-awaited completion of housing projects for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in Nongmensong Lumphira remains uncertain, as the Urban Affairs department is still preparing a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the remaining work and new buildings.
When asked about the status of the projects, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said, “The DPR for the balance work is still under preparation.”
On the number of buildings involved, Dhar said the government is working on both pending and fresh projects, but refused to provide the details.
When questioned about the timeline for handing over the buildings to BPL families, Dhar stated, “Let us complete the work first; these projects are obviously meant for the poor.” It may be mentioned that concerns have also been raised about the incomplete buildings becoming hubs for illegal activities.
Acknowledging the issue, Dhar said he has instructed the officers to finalise the DPR for the balance work and the new building.
“Maybe in a month’s time we will be able to and get it done properly,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has called for urgent action on the incomplete housing projects.
Allan Kharkongor, general secretary of FKJGP Nongmensong Circle, highlighted the rising illegal activities in the area, including drug trafficking, theft and attempted murder.
“The presence of these unlawful activities has severely impacted residents, fostering an environment of fear and insecurity. What was initially intended to benefit vulnerable individuals has instead resulted in a dangerous situation for the entire community,” he said.
The FKJGP has urged the Urban Affairs department to either expedite the completion of the housing projects or secure the premises to prevent further illegal activities.
