Diphu: In a case of elephant death by moving train, a female jumbo and her calf died after being hit by the Delhi-Dibrugarh Up Brahmaputra Mail in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, official sources said on Monday.

The mother and her male calf were crossing the tracks when the train hit them between Langsoliet and Borlangpho under Diphu police station area on Sunday midnight, the sources said.

The tusk and little remains of the pachyderm were recovered from the spot by forest officials on Monday as some people cut up the carcasses and carried away most parts of the dead elephants.

Movement of trains along the tracks was halted at night following the incident, the sources said.

However, with the tracks cleared train services resumed on Monday morning.

Similar incidents of elephant death had been reported in Jalpaiguri district of neighbouring West Bengal in recent times. (PTI)
