District council polls

SHILLONG:  The Congress party is likely to face a revolt in many of the constituencies in the KHADC with many of the ticket aspirants likely to take on the party official nomine in the upcoming district council election scheduled on February 24.
Within a day after the announcement of the party ticket, the disgruntlement among the Congress ticket aspirants have started to surface in Mawhati and Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency.
Former HNLC member James Sylliang who sought for the party ticket from Mawhati constituency has decided to contest as an independent candidate.
Similarly, a loyal Congress worker for the last 25 years Betbok Marbaniang who had contested the previous district council from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency on a Congress ticket has also decided to contest the upcoming election.
In Mawhati, many of the Congress workers including party supporters have decided to come out of the party to oppose the decision of the party leadership in denying the ticket to Sylliang.
“I have decided to contest since there are pressures from majority of my supporters. I am disappointed for not getting the Congress ticket. But I am confident to win the election with the hard work of my supporters and well wishers,” Sylliang said when contacted on Friday.
Meanwhile, it is reported that there is larger discontentment among the loyal Congress members in Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency since the ticket has been given to the local MLA AL Hek’s nephew Rocky Hek.
The Congress workers are unhappy that the party leadership has overlooked the party men who have worked party for the past years.
It may be mentioned that Hek had contested from the Congress only in the last election.
“I did not expect that I would be denied the party ticket. But now I am firm to contest as an independent candidate with the support of the people of the constituency,” Marbaniang said.
