SHILLONG, Dec 3: The state president of the TMC, Charles Pyngrope, has urged the Meghalaya government to intensify its efforts in addressing the growing drug problem in Meghalaya, including ramping up the infrastructure to rehabilitate drug users.
While acknowledging the proactive measures already taken by the government, Pyngrope emphasised the need for more stringent actions, given the increasing prevalence of drug abuse in the state.
He stressed the importance of establishing robust infrastructure in districts to rehabilitate drug users and addicts effectively. “It is not sufficient to rely solely on privately-run rehabilitation centres,” he said, adding that the state government must take a more active role in this area.
Expressing concern over allegations of fund misuse by some NGOs, Pyngrope, who is also the TMC MLA from Nongthymmai, said, “There are many NGOs facing allegations of misusing funds.” He was speaking in the context of the government’s collaboration with NGOs to operate rehabilitation centres. However, he also commended the efforts of genuine NGOs working tirelessly in this field, often using their own resources without government assistance. “I encourage the government to continue partnering with these dedicated organisations,” he added.
Pyngrope recommended that the government closely monitor fund utilisation to ensure accountability.
“Funds cannot be provided without proper oversight,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the TMC MLA revealed that an NGO had approached him with a request for a vehicle to transport aggressive or uncooperative individuals to rehabilitation centres.
He mentioned that funds for such purposes could be allocated through the MLA scheme but noted that this was only a small step. “A year-long rehabilitation programme is often necessary for meaningful recovery,” he concluded.
