NONGPOH, Dec 12: The long-awaited Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road project, spanning 58.6 kilometers, is finally set to take off next year, thanks to persistent advocacy efforts.
The demand for this vital road gained traction following a hunger strike by Bindas Syiem from Umden at the Additional Secretariat premises in Shillong. Her campaign, along with consistent follow-ups by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, has culminated in a major breakthrough.
The state government has allocated funds for the road’s construction under the PMGSY-III Batch-I scheme as of October 10, 2024.
This allocation covers the 38.6-kilometre stretch from Umden to Sonapur at an estimated cost exceeding Rs 47 crore. Additionally, the 20-kilometre stretch from Nongpoh to Umden received funding on November 26, 2024, under the State Plan, with a budget of Rs 49.53 crore.
Residents of the region, spanning hundreds of villages, have welcomed the announcement with relief and optimism.
For years, the dilapidated condition of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur Road, especially during the rainy season, has caused significant hardships for commuters.
As per an official invitation signed by Executive Engineer M. Pyrbot of the Public Works Department (PWD-Roads), Nongpoh Division, the foundation stone for the project will be laid on December 10 by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also oversees the PWD (Roads) department. Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem will be the guest of honour for the ceremony.
According to sources, construction work is slated to begin in January 202.
Once successful, the project is expected to resolve long-standing grievances and significantly improve connectivity, bringing much-needed development and relief to the local residents.
