KVK celebrates golden jubilee with week-long agri fest in EKH

SHILLONG, Dec 7: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), East Khasi Hills, concluded its week-long “Krishi Swarna Samriddhi Week” celebrations, marking the golden jubilee of KVKs. The event showcased the institute’s commitment to empowering farmers through innovative agricultural practices.
The celebrations featured various events, including Fisheries Day, Mushroom Carnival, Buckwheat Day, Horticulture Day and a Village Level Celebration at Syntung village in Mawkynrew region of East Khasi Hills district.
Eminent speakers addressed farmers on integrated farming, organic farming, mushroom cultivation, buckwheat benefits and sustainable agriculture.
Speaking on the occasion, Director of Agriculture JC Lyngdoh stressed on the importance of integrated farming systems and organic farming, while Assistant Director of Horticulture K Kharpran highlighted mushroom cultivation’s numerous health benefits and economic opportunities. Former Director-IIAB Ranchi, Dr A Pattanayak, discussed buckwheat’s immense potential as an alternative crop.
Technical sessions included farmer-scientist interactions, hands-on training and exposure visits covering topics like integrated farming, buckwheat cultivation and pest management.
On the other hand, progressive farmer Wallamkupar Lynrah shared his experiences and received accolades.
The event also saw the distribution of resources, including fish feed, mushroom spawns, vegetable seeds, biofertilisers and vermi beds, among farmers. Participants included farmers from Mylliem Mawiong, Smit, Mawsiatkhnam, Syntung, Umsawmat, Pomlahier and Mawpat.
Dignitaries present included Smti. J. C. Lyngdoh, Shri. K. Kharpran, Dr. A. Pattanayak, Dr. L. Dohtdong, Executive Assistant (Research), MFEC and Dr. Janani P, Scientist-ICAR-CPRI Research Station.
