SHILLONG, Dec 9: As temperatures continue to drop in and around Shillong, the Health department has issued a public health advisory urging people to exercise caution due to the potential health risks associated with cold conditions.
The advisory highlighted that prolonged exposure to low temperatures can lead to serious health issues such as frostbite, hypothermia, and worsening of pre-existing medical conditions. It identified vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, pregnant women, individuals with disabilities, outdoor workers, hikers, farmers, hunters, and those who use alcohol or drugs.
The department emphasised the importance of recognising early warning signs of cold-related conditions.
Symptoms may include shivering, cold and pale skin, fatigue, confusion, slurred speech, fumbling hands, and drowsiness.
To minimise risks, the advisory recommended staying indoors as much as possible and avoiding unnecessary exposure to the cold. It advised wearing multiple layers of loose, lightweight clothing to retain body heat and drinking warm fluids regularly. People were also encouraged to keep their skin moisturised using products like Vaseline, consume healthy foods and fruits to maintain energy levels, and pay special attention to the needs of the elderly and children.
The department also cautioned against certain behaviors. It warned against prolonged exposure to cold conditions and urged people not to ignore shivering, as it indicates the body is losing heat. Additionally, the advisory discouraged alcohol consumption, as it impairs judgment and increases the risk of hypothermia.
