SHILLONG, Dec 9: The Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) has criticised the MDA Government for declaring a school holiday on Tuesday due to a rock concert by legendary singer Bryan Adams.
TMC youth leader Fernandez Dkhar accused the NPP-led MDA government of taking an unusual approach to managing traffic congestion for an evening event by giving everyone the day off.
“Because why not? After all, who needs extra classes, college lectures, or even practical exams during exam season when we have the ‘CM Impact’ to prepare our students for their future?” he remarked sarcastically.
Recalling Shillong’s past reputation as an education hub, Dkhar lamented that Meghalaya now ranks third from the bottom among Indian states in terms of education. “We’ve successfully rocked our way down the charts. But yes, we’re still the Rock Capital of the country—a title we secured without shutting down schools and colleges for concerts in the past,” he said.
Urging the government to prioritise education, Dkhar expressed concern that the younger generation might lose sight of its importance.
He also emphasised the need to balance modern events with traditional festivals and cultural roots, which risk being overshadowed by the growing number of events in the state.
