Former CS elected as new chief of Warjri clan; achievers feted

SHILLONG, Dec 15: The Warjri Clan has elected former Chief Secretary Barkos Warjri as its new president during the Annual General Council meeting held at Pyndengumiong, Mairang, in Eastern West Khasi Hills.
The event witnessed a remarkable turnout, with hundreds of clan members gathering to participate in the congregation. The meeting featured the felicitation of several distinguished clan members who have excelled in various fields, underscoring the clan’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating achievements.
Among the honourees was renowned singer Maxter Warjri, celebrated for his outstanding contributions to music. Dr Miracle Warjri was recognised for earning her PhD in Chemistry, a noteworthy academic milestone. Riffiness Warjri received accolades for her extraordinary mountaineering feat of scaling Mount Abi Gabin in the Himalayan range.
Additionally, Obinas Warjri was feted for his exceptional accomplishment in martial arts, having won a Silver Medal at the World Muay Boran Championship during the 5th International and Thai Martial Arts Games and Festival. Sunita Warjri and Amos Warjri were also commended for their notable contributions to the world of music.
The council’s deliberations primarily focused on the welfare of the Warjri Clan, emphasising the preservation of cultural heritage, especially the unique matrilineal system that defines the clan’s lineage. The discussions underscored the importance of balancing traditional practices with the evolving needs of the community.
The event also included the election of new office-bearers, ensuring a seamless transition of leadership. The newly elected officials are Barkos Warjri (president), Prosper Warjri and Raphael Warjri (vice presidents), Tairossing Warjri (general secretary), Watbor Warjri and Debojit Warjri (joint secretaries), Dr C Jones K Warjri (finance secretary), Benica Warjri (treasurer), Victor Warjri (publicity secretary), Vincent Warjri (assistant publicity secretary) and Jeanita Warjri (auditor).
The council also appointed a team of executive members representing various units across Khasi and Jaintia Hills, with Rudy Warjri and George Arthur Warjri serving as advisers.
