SHILLONG, Dec 17: NPP state president and Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday hailed the Centre’s initiative of ‘one nation one election’, saying it is preferable to the existing system.
Stating that this is his personal opinion and not that of his party, Tynsong said, “I would like to see elections being held once, be it MP or MLA. If you calculate the time consumption that we have with multiple elections, especially in terms of the model code of conduct, it is immense.”
“If we have one election every five years we save a lot of time,” he said.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill that lay down the mechanism to hold simultaneous elections in the country, in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
The bill was introduced after a 90-minute discussion followed by voting. As many as 269 members voted in favour of introduction of the bill and 198 against it.
The central government is likely to move a resolution in Lok Sabha on Wednesday to refer the bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for wider deliberations at every level.
