SHILLONG, Dec 17: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said he is keen to see that students have knowledge of the different languages of the state. He felt that Khasi and Garo languages should be made compulsory up to Class VIII for school students.
Addressing a function here, Sangma said Khasi students should have basic knowledge of the Garo language and vice versa to ensure the integration of the state.
He said the Education Department will be in a better position to take a call on this.
Admitting that there are going to be challenges if the decision is to be implemented, the chief minister said that they will need teachers, trained personnel, and technology.
