DRI makes substantial contraband busts in NE

SHILLONG, Dec 23: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence’s (DRI) focused operations in the Northeast region has yielded substantial results with DRI making six cases against smuggling and trafficking of various drugs, including Methamphetamine tablets, heroin, cannabis/ganja, and hydroponic weed in December 2024 alone. These seizures cumulatively valued at Rs 56.525 crore, with 14 persons arrested and seven vehicles seized.
Notable cases include the interception of a truck at Khanapara, Guwahati, where 1070 kg of ganja were recovered. Another truck was intercepted at the same location, yielding over 3.2 kg of heroin. Additionally, an Indian national was apprehended at Guwahati International Airport with 3,723 grams of Hydroponic Weed worth Rs 3.72 crore.
Between January and December 2024, the DRI booked 45 cases of smuggling and trafficking in the Northeast region, seizing a sizeable quantity of contraband drugs worth Rs 366 crore. These include 204 kg of Methamphetamine tablets, 17 kg of heroin, 2,369 kg of ganja, 6 kg of morphine, and 3.72 kg of hydroponic weed.
The DRI’s efforts have also led to the seizure of 33 vehicles used for transporting contraband drugs and the arrest of 77 individuals involved in smuggling and trafficking.
Investigations revealed that these contraband drugs were primarily smuggled into Manipur and Mizoram from Myanmar, with Ganja sourced from Tripura.
