TURA, Dec 30: The Garo Students’ Movement Committee (GSMC) has written to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking protection for the British Magnetic Pillar at Albella Chidekgre in West Garo Hills. The committee urged that steps be taken to preserve the pillar and prevent illegal digging around it.
According to the committee, illegal digging around the pillar, which dates back to colonial times, threatens its complete destruction. “This act of vandalism violates existing laws and threatens a monument of immense historical, cultural, and ecological significance,” the committee stated.
“The pillar post, a relic from the time of British colonial rule, must be preserved for future generations.”
The committee sought immediate action to protect and preserve the pillar, highlighting its potential for tourism and economic development, as well as its cultural significance to local communities. The pillar is part of a larger network of monuments and relics left behind by the East India Company and deserves preservation for future generations.
