Shillong, Dec 31: Nishanta Chakraborty ended 2024 on a personal high note with his maiden century for the Meghalaya senior men’s team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 against Andhra Pradesh in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Playing in only his fifth match for the senior team, Nishanta, who has graduated from the U-23 side, hit 101 as Meghalaya were out for 223 in 48.2 overs. Unfortunately, Andhra were too strong with the bat and accomplished the chase without loss in 29.3 overs.
Partnering with Nishanta, who made his runs in just 108 balls (13x4s, 2x6s), for most of the Meghalaya innings was Arpit Bhatewara, who struck 66 from 90 deliveries (8x4s, 1×6) for his highest domestic one day score. He and Nishanta put on 177 for the second wicket. This was Meghalaya’s highest total in the tournament where they have been up against some of the biggest states in the country. So far, the team have not been able to register a victory, though there have been a few promising performances. Lerry Sangma was denied a half-century against Railways on 23 December, being dismissed for a fine 47. Two days before that Swarajeet Das bagged 4/45 in 10 overs against Himachal Pradesh, while Arpit has been amongst the runs consistently, racking up 165 in five innings thus far. Meghalaya will play their next match against Sikkim on January 3.
