SHILLONG, Jan 2: The Meghalaya Congress has strongly condemned the actions of social media influencer Akash Sagar, who recently shouted pro-Hindu slogans inside a church in Mawlynnong village.
Contending that the desecration of a spiritual site is not limited to physical acts, Congress leader Manuel Badwar said that Sagar’s actions should be condemned in the strongest terms.
He urged that this issue not only be addressed by the public but also raised in the state assembly, given that India is a secular country.
Calling the influencer’s actions deeply disrespectful and unpardonable, Badwar said, “Such behaviour is a crime, and we, as a party, strongly condemn it. Politicians, policymakers, MLAs, and ministers, including the Chief Minister, must react to this incident as it violates the constitution.”
He also highlighted concerns over the rise of religious fundamentalism, alleging that certain groups of religious fanatics have been empowered to act with impunity in areas where they hold influence.
Badwar lamented that such incidents reflect a lack of understanding about mutual respect in a diverse nation.
“It has never gone to the extent whereby a religious place of somebody has been desecrated like how it has been done recently,” the Congress leader added.
