SHILLONG, Jan 2: The Dorbar Shnong Urmasi-u-Joh on Thursday demanded that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) immediately revoke its order recognising the creation of the new Mawsaw village.
Speaking to reporters, Urmasi-u-Joh Rangbah Shnong, Phaston Wankhar, stated that the KHADC issued the order on December 13, 2024, to establish Mawsaw village.
He asserted that Mawsaw falls under the jurisdiction of Urmasi-u-Joh village, calling the council’s decision an act of disrespect toward the Dorbar Shnong Urmasi-u-Joh and Hima Khyriem.
Wankhar alleged that the order was issued under the directive of KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem and Deputy CEM PN Syiem, claiming it was part of a conspiracy with the Kharkongor clan to gain political advantage in the upcoming KHADC elections.
Following the KHADC’s decision, a meeting of the Dorbar Shnong Executive Committee was convened to discuss the matter and demand the immediate withdrawal of the recognition order.
Wankhar further noted that the Syiem of Hima Khyrim had not issued any No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the Kharkongor clan for creating the new village.
Earlier, the Dorbar Shnong of Umphyrnai announced its decision to boycott the upcoming KHADC elections in protest against the NPP-led Executive Committee’s decision to establish Mawsaw village without approval from the Dorbar Shnong.
The Umphyrnai Dorbar Shnong expressed dissatisfaction with the KHADC leadership for unilaterally creating the village, which comprises only 18 families—mostly from the Kharkongor clan—and is located within the Dymmiew Block under Umphyrnai’s jurisdiction.
It was reported that the boundaries of Mawsaw village were carved out of Urmasi-u-Joh and Umphyrnai without consulting either the Dorbar Shnong or Hima Mylliem.
Notably, the notification for Mawsaw’s creation was issued on the same day the Deputy CEM in charge of Elaka resigned from his post after withdrawing support for the NPP-led Executive Committee.
