SHILLONG, Jan 3: The ruling NPP on Friday slammed Tura MP Saleng Sangma for his anti-district council stance and stated that the age old traditional institution of the autonomous district council (ADC) is here to stay.
The NPP promised to ensure the promotion and sustenance of the autonomous district councils.
“This is a political statement which is totally absurd. We respect the institutions created long ago by our leaders for the safety and security of the indigenous people and it will remain. We will rather try to promote them and this is our commitment,” Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Marcuise N Marak said.
The Tura MP had on Thursday said it will be disastrous to vote for the NPP again in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council elections as the party may wipe out the ADCs to protect its own interests.
Stating that he does not know in what context the Tura MP made the statement, Marak said, “It is incorrect but the NPP stands for the people of Meghalaya. We will try to maintain and promote the traditional institutions created by our leaders.”
“It is up to the people to decide who they want to vote for. As one of the political parties we are also putting up our candidates and we will be seeking public support,” the NPP leader added.
Saleng had accused the NPP of treating the ADCs as their private entity and had added that the people of the state are already aware of what the ruling party is doing.
