SHILLONG, Jan 7: Phase 2 of the Assam-Meghalaya border talks remain stalled allegedly due to the Assam government’s nonchalance, but the process of erecting pillars in areas where both the governments arrived at a consensus during first phase of the talks, is under way.
Revealing this, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, on Tuesday, said, “The finalisation of the boundary pillars is progressing at three locations, based on the information I have,” He added that in November last year, he attended meetings with Assam’s Chief Secretary, chaired by the Union Home Secretary, to review the progress of Phase I of the boundary Memorandum of Understanding.
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary said that the boundary committees for Phase II have been granted an extension until March 31. He, however, noted that with the announcement of the district council elections, the chairpersons and members of the committees are likely to be occupied with campaigning.
“It may take a little more time, but the process remains on track,” the Chief Secretary added.
