SHILLONG, Jan 8: The Assam-Meghalaya boundary talks remain stalled, but there is hope that the process will move one step ahead in Block-I area of West Jaintia Hills after the Deputy Commissioner submits a report to the West Jaintia Hills Regional Committee.
Providing this update, Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the West Jaintia Hills Regional Committee, Sniawbhalang Dhar, on Wednesday, said that the Deputy Commissioner has been given a deadline of one to two months to prepare the required report. “Once the report is submitted, it will be reviewed, and both the Meghalaya and Assam governments will decide on the next steps,” he said.
It may be mentioned that a meeting on the dispute in Block-I area was held recently.
Dhar also acknowledged the difficulties in resolving the remaining six disputed areas under the second phase of the border talks. He, however, stressed on the government’s commitment to addressing these long-standing issues, which have persisted for more than five decades.
Despite the challenges, Dhar reiterated that resolving the border dispute remains a top priority for the government and assured that efforts to find a solution will continue in earnest.
