SHILLONG, Jan 8: The ISBT at Mawlai Mawiong, which has remained non-functional due to the restrictions imposed on the movement of heavy vehicles via the Umiam Dam, will be made operational once an alternative road is constructed.
Disclosing this on Wednesday, Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the Public Works Department is working on an alternative road that will connect the Mawlai Bypass near the ISBT. He said this road is expected to be ready by the end of the year.
The restrictions on heavy vehicles along the Umiam Dam stretch, imposed following its repairs, have caused significant disruptions. These curbs have not only affected inter-state buses but also truckers transporting essential commodities to Shillong.
Currently, inter-state buses are operating from a lay-by near Umiam Lake but it lacks basic amenities. Passengers are facing considerable inconveniences, including having to pay extra to travel from Shillong to Umiam to board the buses.
Asked if any temporary arrangements will be made for the buses for the time being, he mentioned that the government will explore the possibility of providing basic amenities, such as toilets and shelter, at the current lay-by for the benefit of passengers and bus operators.
