Kong Swer laid to rest, thousands pay last respects

SHILLONG: The mortal remains of Padmashree Sylverine Swer was laid to rest on Monday at Mission Compound Graveyard, attended by thousands of people including prominent personalities and people from all walks of life, who joined together to pay their final tribute to Late Swer.

Late Swer passed away at her residence at Riatsamthiah here on Saturday morning after a brief period of illness.

She was born on November 12, 1910, and in her long and illustrious career, she had held several important positions.

After her matriculation and graduation from Calcutta University, Swer began her service career in 1932 and served in various capacities under government and non-government organisations. She had also served in several schools as a teacher.

In 1938, she was appointed the local adviser-cum-trainer of the Girl Guides’ Movement and imparted training to schools students in Assam, Mizoram and Bangladesh.

Swer was known as the frontrunner of the Girl Guides’ Movement.

She was awarded Kaisar-i-Hind Medal by the Government of India for her efficiency and integrity while handling the rationing system and for contributing many years of service to the Girl Guides’ Movement, Assam.
