SHILLONG: A magisterial probe has been ordered into the death of an under trial prisoner at Shllong jail on Saturday.

“As per the NHRC guideline, the magisterial probe is necessary and a fixed time will be given to the magistrate to complete the probe”, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said on Monday.

The under trial prisoner identified as Rajendra Rabi Das, who was also a mental patient, died in a mysterious way. The matter came to light only after he was brought dead to Civil Hospital.

According to reports, the prisoner first collapsed inside his cell on Saturday morning. The prisoner who was brought to jail in November 2012, was undergoing treatment at Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (MIMHANS) since February last year. The Shillong jail is regularly in the news for the assault among the prisoners who are lodged at the jail.

Last month, three jailed police men were assaulted by GNLA cadres in the jail.
