SHILLONG, Jan 12: Shillong and Darjeeling share similarities in their terrain, and both towns boast thriving tourism industries. While Darjeeling heavily relies on tourism as a key economic driver, stakeholders believe that Shillong, having gained significant recognition and a spot on every tourist’s map, needs to adopt a more welcoming attitude toward visitors to further boost its appeal.
The Shillong Times spoke to several stakeholders in Darjeeling about how they transformed the town into a flourishing tourist destination over the years and the challenges posed by the influx of tourists.
A tourist cab driver, who identifies himself as Pradhan, shared that Darjeeling’s economy largely depends on two industries — tea and tourism.
“People here earn their livelihood by working as cab drivers, hotel staff, tourist guides, or running small businesses at tourist spots,” he said. “The backbone of our strong tourism industry is our hospitality. Whether it’s a hotel receptionist, a cab driver, or someone at a tourist spot, you will find them speaking politely and with a welcoming attitude toward visitors.”
A restaurant owner, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed his admiration for Meghalaya’s beauty, acknowledging it as a strong competitor to Darjeeling.
“To attract tourists, we must be helpful, welcoming, and humble,” he said, adding that Darjeeling’s unique selling points (USPs) include the breathtaking view of Kanchenjunga and the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railways.
The professionalism of people working at various tourist sites, such as Batasia Loop and Rock Garden, also contributes to Darjeeling’s success as a tourist hub. Locals at Batasia Loop, for instance, warmly welcome visitors and provide detailed explanations about the significance of Kanchenjunga, ensuring a memorable experience.
Although food and accommodation in Darjeeling are relatively expensive, local stakeholders prioritise making tourists’ stays as comfortable as possible.
A visit to the iconic Mall Road, another of Darjeeling’s USPs, reveals a clean, well-maintained stretch free of hawkers. It remains the favourite hangout spot for tourists, further enhancing the town’s reputation as a prime destination.
