SHILLONG, Jan 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) marked its 150th anniversary here on Wednesday, celebrating its legacy of delivering reliable weather services while embracing modern technologies to enhance accuracy and impact.
To commemorate the occasion, the Meteorological Centre in Shillong hosted a public open day, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to explore its operations.
Attendees received detailed explanations about the equipment and technology used by the IMD and gained insights into the process of generating weather forecasts.
Thangjalal Lhouvum, Chief of the IMD in Shillong, reiterated the department’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure across Meghalaya.
He stated that these upgrades aim to provide more accurate and localised weather predictions to benefit the public.
Lhouvum also highlighted the introduction of impact-based weather forecasts, an innovative approach that not only predicts weather conditions but also anticipates their potential effects.
This advancement, he added, is designed to help communities better prepare for adverse weather events.
