MAWKYRWAT, Jan 21: Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital has several shortcomings and it is the district’s only major hospital. The alleged shortcomings, identified by the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), South West Khasi Hills District, include shortage of manpower including specialists, lack of infrastructure, etc.
Speaking to media representatives after the inspection, FKJGP district president Kenesjune L Nonglait revealed that the federation also met the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr M Lyngdoh, to discuss various issues.
According to Nonglait, Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital faces a significant shortage of manpower, particularly specialist doctors.
The hospital currently lacks essential specialists, including ophthalmologists, dermatologists, general medical officers, and medicine specialists. “This shortage of doctors has created numerous challenges for the hospital,” Nonglait said.
He also pointed out that the hospital urgently requires several pieces of equipment, such as CT scan and ultrasound machines. Additionally, the absence of staff quarters has posed a major issue, as hospital staff are forced to live in rented accommodations.
“We observed that the doctors, nurses, and other staff at this hospital are working diligently, but the lack of manpower and equipment has made their work extremely challenging,” Nonglait stated.
The Federation has called on the Health department to immediately address these issues by equipping the Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital with the necessary facilities and resources. “This will greatly benefit the people of the district, especially those from poor families, who currently have to rely on hospitals in Shillong,” Nonglait added.
