TURA, Jan 21: A fresh allegation of illegal mining and transportation of coal has surfaced in South Garo Hills, with Karak R Sangma, a Congress leader from the district, writing to Deputy Commissioner Richard Yanthan seeking an inquiry into the illegalities.
Sangma’s complaint comes in the wake of two similar complaints which has already led to multiple inquiries from various agencies.
In his complaint submitted recently, Sangma said that illegal mining was taking place in the village of Gare Gittim with the same coal being dumped in Pathargittim under Nongalbibra police station. Further illegally-mined coal from the Goreng and Rangram areas in West Khasi Hills was being dumped in Jadigittim. This coal, other than the one in the Coal India Limited depot, is currently being transported in an illegal manner, he claimed.
Sangma, while seeking a spot inquiry, has also sought the immediate stoppage of illegal mining and transportation of coal from Assam.
Recently, a man, named Krishan Kumar, has written a letter to Justice (retired) BP Katakey complaining against ongoing illegal rat-hole coal mining at Goreng under West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills and export of the same to Bangladesh by two individuals, Katman T Sangma and Raja Das, using fake invoices.
Kumar urged Justice Katakey to conduct a surprise visit to the Rongsa Awe coal depot for physical verification without any delay.
