SHILLONG, Jan 22: Controversial Assam based Hindu rights group – Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP) – has expressed concern over clashes between villagers and police in Mawkynrew village in East Khasi Hills on Monday over the construction of Ramakrishna Mission ME School.
In a statement on Wednesday, the group urged Meghalaya’s political leadership to initiate action against what it claimed were “incidents of religious intolerance”.
KSP president Satya Ranjan Borah alleged that opposition by Christian groups to the school’s construction reflects a growing trend of defying India’s constitutional values.
Borah stressed that such incidents could threaten internal security and national integrity. “Meghalaya’s authorities should recognise the urgency of the situation and act appropriately as soon as possible,” he said.
The KSP urged the Judiciary to ensure implementation of Article 51A of the Constitution and requested citizens to fulfil their constitutional obligations.
Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills district administration is yet to lift the curfew imposed on Monday following a violent clash between police and public at Mawkynrew village.
The clash between the police and villagers left 12 people injured including a pregnant woman and women police personnel.
Police on Wednesday said that the situation is peaceful and under control.
“We are yet to take any action against anyone in connection with Monday’s violent incident,” police said.
Attempts to contact Mawkynrew MLA, Banteidor Lyngdoh failed as his mobile phone was switched off.
