SHILLONG, Jan 24: The East Khasi Hills District Administration has decided to utilise the non-functional Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Mawiong for key election-related processes of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) across 15 constituencies under its jurisdiction.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah informed media persons here on Friday that nomination filing for 10 out of 15 constituencies will take place at ISBT, Mawiong, while nominations for Sohryngkham, Mawsynram, and Nongspung-Sohiong will be conducted at the DC office in Shillong.
The processes for Pynursla and Langkyrdem will be held at SDO (Civil), Pynursla.
Counting for all 15 constituencies, on the other hand, will be centralised at ISBT, Mawiong, ensuring a streamlined process.
Explaining the decision, Kurbah stated that shifting most election activities to the outskirts of the city aims to reduce traffic congestion and minimise disruptions for schoolchildren in the state capital.
The filing period for electoral roll claims and objections ended on January 22, and the final electoral roll will be released on January 27, the same day the KHADC elections will be officially notified.
Prohibitory orders against defacement of private and public property will also be issued on that day.
Addressing concerns over law and order, the DC assured that the district remains largely peaceful, with only minor issues in certain areas, which will be effectively managed.
To ensure fair elections, the administration has also capped candidate expenditure at Rs 5 lakh, while the security deposit has been set at Rs 3,000.
